'My images should not only be represented as paintings that have a timelessness but also as our land to be nurtured, revered and looked after for this generation and those of the future as a lasting treasure for all.'
Personal History
Barb Suttie was raised in Eltham, the artist colony of Melbourne,
Australia. Growing up she tasted the urban culture but also took
pleasure in bush walking and the natural environment. These early
experiences flow into her art.
Childhood memories and experiences of growing up in Eltham in the
60’s and 70’s have laid the foundation for the passions of this
artist. Like many others, the Caldera’s beauty and communal village
life drew her to Uki and she settled there in 1984. She explored
fibre crafts, creating life size puppets and then moved towards
painting.
'Art is my private retreat, my solace and my sanctuary and I
like to invite the viewer into my world. It has become my passion, a
way of life, seeing and creating.'
Art became Barb’s way of retreating to another place. Today she
still paints on location, braving flies, storms, cattle and the
elements to capture the beauty of the Caldera Rim!
Subject Matter
Barb Suttie is known locally as ‘the Mt Warning Artist” who
predominantly paints Mt Warning and the Caldera Region. Her other
subjects can include the Australian and New Zealand mountainous and
valleyed landscapes as well as creating less representational
pieces.
Barb works almost exclusively in oils either on location, from
photos or sketches. This world heritage region, where she lives,
provides her with a wealth of subject matter.
Barb creates her oil landscapes by immersing herself in nature. She
has bushwalked, climbed mountains, canoed and flown in an open
cockpit plane in and around Mt Warning and the surrounding caldera.
Like many visitors to the region, she feels herself drawn to a place
sacred for thousands of years. It is this national heritage and
unique quality of life that attracts and nurtures her creativity.
'I welcome you to share a piece of this visual national iconic
landscape and spiritual treasure. I have lived here for over 25
years inspired by the timeless beauty of the Mt Warning Caldera
region, on NSW north coast Australia.'
